Muhammad began preaching in Mecca around 610 CE, after what Muslims believe was his first revelation from God (Allah) through the Angel Gabriel. Initially, his preaching was done privately, primarily to his family and close friends.
Around 613 CE, he began to preach publicly in Mecca. His central message revolved around the concept of Tawhid (the absolute oneness of God), and the rejection of the polytheistic beliefs and practices prevalent in pre-Islamic Arabian society, including the worship of idols housed in the Kaaba. He emphasized the importance of Social%20Justice, advocating for the care of the poor, widows, and orphans, and condemning the exploitation of the vulnerable. Muhammad also preached about the Day%20of%20Judgement, urging people to repent and live righteous lives in preparation for accountability before God.
His early followers consisted mainly of the poor, slaves, and younger members of Meccan society. His message challenged the established social and economic order, and he faced significant opposition from the powerful Meccan elites who benefited from the existing polytheistic religious practices and the pilgrimage trade associated with them.
